What's required to get an account?

First step is to choose a Name. Our account names are commonly of the form of two words pushed together; such as: CoachBob, or YankeesMom, or TheBoss, etc. However, almost any string can work if it is made with just letters ('A' to 'Z' and 'a' to 'Z') and digits ('0' to '9').

The second step is to think of a password (a secret passphrase used to ensure that only you know the secret to log in under your Name) which you will now encrypt into a random-looking string that can be used to initialize your account. Once you pick something to use as a password or passphrase, go to http://www.cnll.org/?action=crypt and type your password into the input-box and hit the Submit button. What you should see next is a line that looks like:

 Encrypted password = $1$uKUpetba$3vRNNp.cPWwoJmo5bKt6X/

And yes, that encrypted stuff does appear to be the result of a toddler banging on the keyboard. The good news is that once the account is created you never have to see that crazy string again, you just have to remember your passphrase that you entered into the box.

Third, send email to the webmaster at CNLL.ORG with your chosen Name as well as a cut-and-paste of that encrypted password line (include all the punctuation, if any). [The rest of the instructions on the http://www.cnll.org/?action=crypt page can be ignored -- it is just administrivia that the webmaster will manage.]

Finally, you will receive a reply email once the new account is setup. Then you will be able to use the Login link on the Staff Info page.

Once you are logged in, if you look down at the footer of each page, you should find an Edit link below each modifiable page. Now, to learn more about what to do when you are editing a page, start with Basic Editing, or for more detailed information start with the Documentation Index.

If there are any questions or problems, contact the WebMaster at CNLL.ORG.
