Game Commentaries

  • 6/13 Tournament Championship: Reds vs Cardinals... The Championship brought on nerves and a few surprises. Jed hit a two run home run to put the Reds ahead in the first inning. Outstanding pitching by Jonathan (6 strikeouts) and two amazing stretching catches by Lexing in center field helped the Reds stay close through the first five innings. Max fired up the team with a week-side double and exciting steals to score twice in the fourth. Mathias at shortstop made throws to first and almost completed a double play for two outs. Alex from third base made a good throw for an out in the third inning. Shiron made two solid throws from second for outs in the 4th and 5th inning. Jed struck out two at pitcher in the 6th inning. Mathias made a craddle catch as catcher to end the sixth. Reds pitchers allowed 8 walks and hit to batters. Strong Cardinal pitching kept the Reds team hits to 7, the second lowest count for the season. A tightly fought game let go with a few errors and passed balls on wild pitches to a red hot Cardinal hitting, pitching and defensive squad determined the fate of the game. Cardinals win 9-6.

  • 4/26 Reds vs TC Giants... The hot pitching of Tri-City Giants' big ace was not enough to hold off Reds big bats and shining defense. It was a good competition right down to the last out. Cardinals win 12-10.
  • 4/8 Reds vs CA Angels... The cold wind chilled the Reds as they battled a solid CA Angels squad. • 3/22 Reds vs Giants... Two singles by Jonathon, and almost a double by Ryan on a close play at second, along with singles by Mathias, Jed, Alex, and Matthew weren't enough offense to get past strong Giants pitching. The Giants pitchers only gave up 3 walks while Reds pitchers gave up 13 bases on balls. Pitchers Ryan and Mathias both registered two strike outs and Alex came in and did a nice job closing out the game with one strike out. The outstanding defensive play of the game went to Mathias with a double play from short-stop position, by fielding a grounder, stepping on second and throwing to Ryan to get the Giants out of the top of the sixth. Mathias at catcher threw a runner out at second and Shiron at catcher threw a runner out at third. The Reds couldn't convert runners on base to runs and came up short in the end. Giants win 6-2.
  • 3/19 Reds vs DiamondBacks... Reds win 17-4.

After a stormy morning, the lightning bats of Gabe (triple, single), Alex (double, single and 4 RBIs), Shiron (two line-drives caught in left, single and 1 RBI), Jonathan (2 singles), Matthew (1 single) broke open the Red's scoring machine. Power pitching of the Red's Aces Jed (6 K's in 2 innings) and Ryan (5 K's in 2 innings) shut down the offense of the Cardinals in the first 4 innings. Offensively, everybody on the team scored including Jonathan (scored 3 times), Mathias (scored twice and stole 3 bases), Ryan (scored two times), Gabe (scored 2 times), Alex (scored 2 times), Jed (scored once), Yoshi (scored once), and Shiron (scored once). Pictures of the Pros

Tim Hudson - Terrific Pitching Stride

Notice how low Hudson gets as he prepares to throw. He has bent his back leg and the ball is actually below his knee as he starts his stride. Eyes are focused on the target.
Glove arm is over the front knee. Throwing arm is getting into position as his landing foot makes contact with the ground. Note the extension in his stride, front toe is pointing towards the plate and shoulder position prior to release.
As the foot has landed, the arm is now in throwing position and chest & shoulders begin moving towards the target.
At release, the chest and head move towards the front knee. Note the extension of the back foot as he pushes from the rubber. His back knee is low and almost touching the ground

Eric Byrnes - Hitting Sequence

Eric Byrnes demonstrates a very traditional baseball swing which highlights many of the basics of hitting. First, look at the stance right before his stride - Hands at the top of the strike zone, feet shoulder width apart, back is straight and chest is leaning forward. Note that his knees are bent a lot and his bottom is sticking out almost like he is resting on a tall chair.
As he strides, his hands are back and high, the bat handle is pointing at the catcher. Having those bent knees to start has allowed him to get into this position without moving his head (up/down as many young players do). Chin is over the front shoulder
Note several things in the swing. Head is down, eyes are looking down the barrel of the bat, contact is made in front of the plate (body is behind the ball), front arm is straight with the bat, front leg is straight. His head is over the back knee, back leg is bent, and the back foot is up on the toe. Also note that his front foot is rolling slightly.
Finally, the follow through on his swing. The arms are extended, the bat is sweeping a large arc, the body is leaning in towards the contact point - out over and in front of the plate. Back shoulder has now turned fully and is under the chin.
